Training To Be Brighter and Better

This week our staff spent a morning receiving training from the Leicester City Council to teach us new and improved ways to help our guests improve their health and make positive change, focusing on the first step - having healthy conversations. It’s important to always make the effort to keep up to date with training and up-skilling for our staff, to make sure we can provide the best service for our guests.

It's so important we are open to learning about the many different ways in which our guests' lives can be affected, and the many barriers that make the path to meaningful change such a difficult one. Learning how to engage guests and have better, healthier conversations was really helpful and gave us all added tools with which to support those who use our services. - Keith, Centre Manager

The training was split into a number of interactive parts, and was always open for questions. One exercise had staff practising having a conversation about making a healthy change with one another, so we'd be better able to have a similar conversation with a guest. We tried the same exercise before and after the training, which helped us to gain a better understanding of where people could improve with the way they discussed the topic of change and self improvement.

It was really interesting, the training was interactive which made it enjoyable. The trainers were engaging and kept the course relevant to the work that we do. - Jo, Mentor Coordinator

We wanted to say a huge thank you to Ursula and Daxa from the Leicester City Council, for helping to organise and provide this training. By providing this training to many different organisations they had an in-depth and insightful perspective throughout each stage of the course, and were able to keep the learning materials relevant to the homelessness sector whilst providing new and useful information.

It was really nice to do training as a group! I liked that we got to practise different approaches, and that it wasn’t just theory. I liked the understanding that a lot of what impacts a person's health is out of their control. - Loki, Mentor Coordinator.

Our next staff training will be in late November, focusing on drug awareness, which will be useful when understanding what is currently being dealt and used on the streets, as well as helping guests who are struggling with substance abuse and sign posting them to relevant services.
